Blue Jays Player's Gay Slur

Last week, Toronto Blue Jays player Yunel Escobar came out to play a game with a Spanish phrase painted in white over his eye black. The phrase, when translated, is widely interpreted as being an anti-gay slur. As a result, he was suspended for three games.

The interesting part is that there is now a debate over whether his suspension was too excessive, or not excessive enough. The Huffington Post has done a segment debating this issue here.

Apparently, while the phrase does come across as homophobic, it is also a very common phrase to be heard behind the scenes in major league sports.

Ultimately, though, as a high-profile sports player (who many kids in Canada look up to), I think you should be held to a higher standard of behaviour. I think that this suspension probably was not long enough - Brett Lawrie was suspended for four games for accidentally throwing down his helmet and it bouncing up and hitting the umpire. Are these two acts equal? I really don't think so. One was most likely an accident (who could intentionally get a helmet to bounce a certain way to hit someone?), while Escobar's was completely deliberate. Although, I won't get into Brett Lawrie here...

I should note that Escobar has apologized and is also taking part in community service that is aimed to promote "tolerance to others based on their sexual orientation."

I can't wait until I can get to Cob's Bread to try...

Blogging Again?

I'm thinking that I should start blogging again. Just small tidbits. I was thinking of tweeting, but I'm just not up to date with all the Twitterisms unfortunately. So welcome back!

I guess a lot has happened in a year and a half! I actually think it may have been longer than that. Sorry, everyone.

So with this intro out of the way, I think I'm just going to blog about things I'm doing, things I've found that I like, that kind of stuff. I just feel like I should have more of an online presence as I get out of university and into real life.

And with that, This Blog Has a Porpoise is back!

My Fair Lady!

I guess I haven't posted lately because I haven't done anything that I think anyone would be interested in. Sooo I'll just sum up my last two months now.

First of all, I wanted to share that I'm going to see My Fair Lady at the Shaw Festival today and I'm so excited. I think My Fair Lady is one of my favourite musicals and I absolutely love the movie with Audrey Hepburn. So I'll let you know how that goes. I've heard the costumes are amazing so I can't wait to see Ascot Gavotte!

It just occurred to me that I never reviewed the fourth Pirates instalment. How could I let that happen?!!! Anyway, I saw it on opening day and I really enjoyed it. You know what else I'm enjoying? Looking at the Swarovski Pirates collection. I'm so tempted to get one (especially since they're limited edition...damn you, scarcity!). If you've seen the movie, this is the actual necklace Penelope Cruz's character wears.

And it's gorgeous...but a wee bit out of my price range. And this necklace is designed to look like Captain Jack's famous compass! So far it has been a very piratey summer. And I'm good with that. Also, did you hear that Johnny Depp's signed on for the fifth Pirates already? They may already be making it actually. As long as they keep delivering fresh, interesting scripts and plots, I think I'm okay with that.

Oh and I have to share this:

My friend baked me a dinosaur cake for my birthday! Isn't it awesome? It was also delicious!!!

Sooo that's my update! Now that summer is half over, I've still got my California trip coming up and I'm only half done my 12 weeks of work (actually, I've only worked 5 weeks so far) and of course there's the end of summer shopping for fall that I look forward to every year. So I guess what I'm saying is...look for my next post in another 2 months!

Interviews by Muppets

So while browsing YouTube today, I came across this Sesame Street segment called Conversations with Bert.

Bert asks some strange questions, but if I had a talk show...I'd probably ask similar things =) Housemates and I all figured out which character from Sesame Street we would be if we were a character from Sesame Street, and it was widely accepted that I would be Bert. I hope Conversations with Bert has a bright future.

I also stumbled upon this video, in which Kermit interviews the various stars attending the Pirates of the Caribbean premiere:

Cute!!
